Lions Hunt Buffalo
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park straddles the far Northern Cape region of South Africa and the south-western region of Botswana known as the Kalahari. This single ecological unit between the two countries was formed in 1999, covering close to 38,000 km².
Leaving Cape Town early on day 1 we travel via Pofadder and Upington, staying overnight en route to the park. Travelling on the South African side of the Kgalagadi, the spectacular red Kalahari sand dunes and thorny grassland vegetation provide the backdrop to a wilderness experience, with beautiful sunsets and sparkling stars under clear night skies. Exciting and varied wildlife is on view within the park.
Lion, leopard and cheetah are commonly seen in the Nossob Valley region. Elsewhere, brown hyena and jackals are in abundance. The park is also home to gemsbok (oryx), springbok, hartebeest, eland and various Kalahari game, including the famous black-maned Kalahari lion.
We visit the Nossob and Mata Mata areas of the park, traversing the 4 X 4 route to Bitterpan, where we spend the night at a Safari Lodge which is just outside the reserves northern boundary.
For visitors with extra time available, we recommend the 8-day safari option, which give you time to take the Mabuasehube Wilderness Trail.
